Mini Mangat (nee Sandhar): BA (Hons), MA. Project Manager
Mini Mangat is the Project Manager of Apnee Sehat CIC. Being of Asian origin herself, her passion for Apnee Sehat is both professional and personal. Her professional background is in the Human Resources field and her expertise lies in Equality & Diversity, she has valuable experiences of community work. As a member of the community where the Apnee Sehat project was originally initiated, Mini has had the opportunity to observe the project from a service user perspective, which gives her a greater understanding of the positive impacts to individuals of Apnee Sehat's work. Mini is passionate about community engagement and will strive for Apnee Sehat to make a healthy difference within communities.

Dr Elizabeth Hughes: Consultant Chemical Pathologist & Hon Senior Lecturer Metabolic
Medicine, University of Birmingham
In 1990, Dr Elizabeth Hughes was appointed Consultant in Metabolic Medicine and Chemical
Pathology at Sandwell General Hospital, West Bromwich and Honorary Senior Lecturer in
The Department of Medicine at Birmingham University.
Dr Hughes specialises in obesity, Type 2 diabetes, thyroid disease, Nutrition and other
metabolic disorders and is recognised as an international expert and opinion leader in
hyperlipidaemia. She lectures regularly throughout the UK and worldwide.
Dr Hughes is Director of the Sandwell Medical Research Unit, a leading UK centre for
research into diabetes and heart disease particularly focusing on research on cardiovascular
risk in the South Asian Community.
Dr Shirine Boardman: Consultant Diabetologist & Hon. Assoc. Prof, Warwick Medical School
Dr Shirine Boardman, a consultant Diabetologist of South Asian origin, developed the innovative Apnee Sehat (“Our Health”) community programme in Leamington, which has been nominated for 5 national awards and became a social enterprise DOH pathfinder in 2007. The project set out to develop a lifestyle and diabetes educational programme which would be culturally acceptable to Britain’s South Asian commmunity using a "temple to
table" model. A Bollywood style lifestyle DVD was launched in the House of Commons in March 2006 and the innovative delivery model brings the healthy living and self care messages of the NHS right to the “heart and nerve” centre of its community, facilitating engagement and motivation.
Prof Sudhesh Kumar: Honorary Consultant Physician at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire
Sudhesh Kumar is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean (External Affairs) at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick and Honorary Consultant Physician at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, NHS Trust. He is also the academic development Director for the University Hospital, Coventry. He moved here in September 2003 from the University of Birmingham, where he was Reader in Human Metabolism.
Prof Kumar leads a multi-disciplinary research team that seeks to unravel the molecular basis of human body fat distribution, the defects that cause diabetes and heart disease, and to discover new ways of targeting treatment. The group is internationally reputed for its work on human fat cells. In addition, he also runs a number of clinical studies including investigating novel approaches to delivery of care for obesity and new ways of delivering diabetes care to the Indo-Asian population. Prof Kumar has published over 170 papers relating to obesity and diabetes and edited 2 books on this subject.
Apnee Sehat is an innovative model for developing and delivering diabetes care to the South Asian population. We have worked closely with local communities, NHS organisations and University research and education units to achieve this. Sue Cresswell: Medical Secretary
Sue Creswell is the Medical Secretary for the Apnee Sehat Project part of which involves assisting with the Diabetes & Healthy Living Education Sessions run by the project for the community. Sue has been involved with the Apnee Sehat project since February 2007.
Chris Coe: Senior Research Fellow
Chris is a Senior Research Fellow, based in the Institute of Health, University of Warwick. Her research interests are located broadly within the area of Health Inequalities and specifically child and family health. Chris has been involved with the evaluation of the Apnee Sehat project since early 2006.
Pam: Nurse
I am a practice nurse working within the Coventry PCT and have been involved in the UK Asian Diabetes Study for 3 years. Since the beginning of 2007 I have been a part of the Apnee Sehat project working as a Diabetes Nurse in the Sikh Community Centre.
Kay: Nurse
I am a Research Nurse working for the University of Warwick and prior to the Apnee Sehat project I worked on the ASCOT study and the UK Asian Diabetes Study.
